What are SEO, AEO, GEO and WebMCP?

They are four related ways of making a website work for the systems people use to find things. SEO makes a page findable and rankable by a search engine. AEO structures a specific answer so an answer engine can extract and present it. GEO makes a business clear and consistent enough that a generative system describes it accurately. WebMCP declares a small set of capabilities that a compatible AI agent may discover and use. They share one foundation and differ in what counts as success.

The order matters. Each one depends on the one before it: an answer nobody can crawl cannot be extracted, and a business whose facts contradict each other cannot be described correctly no matter how well its pages are written. A business that starts with the fourth while failing the first has spent money in the wrong place.

None of this is a way to be guaranteed a ranking, a citation, or a mention. It is a way to make sure that when a person or a machine looks, what they find is accurate, complete, and attributable to you.

What it is
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of structuring content so a system that returns a direct answer, rather than a list of links, can locate the relevant passage and present it. The unit of work is the individual answer, not the whole page: one page can hold a dozen answers, and each has to make sense on its own.
The problem it solves
Most business pages are written as brochures. The answer to the question the visitor actually typed is somewhere in the fourth paragraph, wrapped in context, and phrased as a sales point. A system extracting an answer has nothing clean to lift.

When each question is answered immediately, in plain language, in a passage that survives being quoted out of context, both the reader and the extraction system get what they came for in the same sentence.

What it is
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of making a business clear enough, consistent enough, and well-evidenced enough that a generative system composing an answer describes it correctly. It is about being understood and attributed accurately, which is a different goal from ranking a page or being quoted verbatim.
The problem it solves
Generative systems assemble an answer from many sources. When a business states its services one way on its site, another way on its profile, and a third way on a directory it has not looked at in years, the assembled description is a blend of all three, and often wrong.

What it is
WebMCP is an emerging approach that lets a website declare a small, explicit set of capabilities an AI agent may discover and use, instead of leaving the agent to guess by reading the page. Each capability states what it does, what it needs, and what it returns, and anything that changes data requires confirmation first.
The problem it solves

How customer search behaviour is changing

The clearest change is that searches are getting longer and more conversational. People increasingly type or speak a complete question rather than two or three keywords, and they increasingly get an answer on the results page or inside an assistant without visiting a website at all.

That has two consequences for a local business. The first is that the phrasing customers use has moved closer to natural speech, so pages built around keyword fragments match less of the real demand than they used to. The second is that the answer itself is now often the product: if a page cannot supply a clean, self-contained answer, something else will, and the business is described second-hand or not at all.

What has not changed is the underlying requirement. Accurate, specific, well-structured information about a real business is what worked before and what works now. The difference is that the audience for that information has grown to include machines that read it, summarise it, and pass it on.

An honest caveat: the pace and shape of this shift vary widely by industry and area, published figures disagree with each other, and we do not quote statistics we cannot verify. What we can observe directly is how a given website performs against the checks below.

Signs a business website has fallen behind

None of these are cosmetic. Each one changes whether a page can be found, extracted, or described correctly.

The site was built once and never revisited

Search engines changed, competitors published, and the business itself changed. A site that has not been edited in three years is describing a business that no longer exists in the form it describes.

Every service lives on one crowded page

A single "Services" page listing eight offerings in bullets gives no page the chance to be the answer to any one of them, and gives an extraction system nothing specific to lift.

The best explanations are locked in sliders or images

Content inside a carousel, a script-populated tab, or a graphic is often absent from the response body. If it is not in the HTML, it cannot be indexed, extracted, or quoted.

Business details disagree between the site and the profiles

A phone number here, a tracking number there, an old suite number on a directory. Systems assembling an answer blend all three and produce something wrong.

City pages are the same page with the name swapped

These are doorway pages. Google names them in its spam policies, and they read as templated to a person too.

Nothing says who wrote it or when it was checked

With no author and no review date, there is no reason for any system to prefer the site over a third-party summary written years ago.

  • Move the answer to the top of the page Two to four plain sentences that answer the question before any context or persuasion.
  • Make each answer survive being quoted No "as mentioned above", no pronouns pointing at an earlier paragraph. The passage has to hold up alone.
  • Give each page its own questions Repeating the same three FAQs everywhere creates near-duplicates that compete with each other.

Representation

  • Make the business facts agree everywhere One name, one address format, one phone number, one description, on the site and on every profile and directory that carries them.

A dental practice being described inaccurately

An assistant lists treatments the practice stopped offering two years ago, because a directory still carries the old list. The fix is not more content: it is reconciling the facts across the site, the profile, and the directories until every source agrees.

A restaurant with the menu inside an image

The menu is a photograph of a printed card. No search engine, answer engine, or assistant can read a dish, a price, or a dietary note. Publishing the same menu as text makes it answerable to every one of them at once.

Common myths about AI search

Most of these are sold rather than believed. Each one costs a business owner money in a different way.

Myth: AI search has made SEO obsolete.

Reality: Assistants answer from crawled pages and live search indexes. A page a search engine cannot fetch is a page an assistant is unlikely to use. SEO became the prerequisite, not the casualty.

Myth: You can pay to be included in AI answers.

Reality: There is no submission process, no ad slot, and no ranking dashboard for generated answers. Anyone selling placement is selling something they do not control.

Myth: Publishing an llms.txt file gets you cited.

How is progress measured if rankings are not promised?
